TEN VIRGINS

March 26, 2013

Jesus is famous for his parables. Some are well known, like the Prodigal Son. But what about the Ten Virgins?

"At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom."
                                                      --Matthew 25:1 TNIV

It's in Matthew 25:1-13. Five of the ten virgins are ready for the coming of the bridegroom, five, says Jesus, dawdle as if they have all the time in the world for the coming bridegroom, in other words, they are not ready. And they are told, "Too bad for you, you are not welcome at the wedding banquet."

What? I thought Jesus was ALWAYS patient, ALWAYS gracious, but here he says, "Too late. You aren't getting in" What's up with that? To which Jesus says, "This is how God's kingdom works." And he ends with these words, "Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour." I wonder why Jesus told us THIS parable?

Joyfully,
