Discipleship is about transformation, change per Jesus' leadership. Jesus redefines "family."
[Jesus] replied to him, "Who is my mother and who are my brothers?" Pointing to his disciples, he said, "Here are my mother and my brothers. For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother."
--Matthew 12:48-50 TNIV
Of course we are to love our families, but Jesus does not allow blood to be thicker than water, the waters of baptism, in this case. Jesus knows that family can be a stumbling block to faithfulness.
When told, "Your mother wants you," Jesus says, my family are those who follow God's leadership. That's the family!
