IN OVER YOUR HEAD

May 19, 2011

One of the chronic mistakes we humans commit is our lack of a proper assessment of ourselves and or the situation we're in, a dose of healthy humility.  King Herod was no exception.

The man went, beheaded John in the prison, and brought back his head on a platter.  He presented it to the girl, and she gave it to her mother.

Let's suppose that kings have a special challenge coming to a right assessment of self and situation.  King Herod had a peculiar affection for the preaching of John the Baptist, but he had a weak-spot when women were concerned.  It led to several murders and an on-going pattern of lustful self-indulgence.  Bewitched by his animal passions, Herod makes a promise that costs John the Baptist his head.  Like virtually all other situations, Herod (after all he's the king) thought he knew what he was doing.  He was in over his head.  That's the blinding nature of our sin.

To trifle with such sinful passions, Herod knew better, but he thought he could get away with it.  Isn't that the way it always is?  Better to admit to being in over our heads, repent, and ask God to have mercy on us.  It will keep us from losing our heads.

Joyfully,
