SARDIS

March 1, 2011

Of my numerous sins, I have a thing for expensive golf polo shirts. The expensive ones come in such fantastic and vivid colors. They're cool.

"I know your deeds, you have a reputation of being alive, but you are dead. Wake up! Strengthen what remains and is about to die, for I have found your deeds unfinished in the sight of my God....
But you have a few people in Sardis who have not soiled their clothes. They will walk with me, dressed in white, for they are worthy."
                                                - Revelation 3:1,2,4 TNIV

Sardis had the reputation of possessing beautiful fabrics, bringing color to a dull, shabby and boring clothing world. The problem was it was their faith that had gone dull and shabby. For too long the people of Sardis had treated their walk with Christ haphazardly, and casually. Jesus tells them to put their passion and devotion into something that brings them life. And again God turns the table on his people. He will dress them in cloth, not of brilliant design and stunning colors, but in white, the color of humility, and also of faithfulness.

How we doing in this respect? Do we wear designer clothing, but are a bit dull and shabby on the inside? The issue is not guilt. The issue, like the people of Sardis, is that with the good news of Christ we can turn it around. By God's mercy, he will dress us in white - the garments of humility, life, and even eternity.

Joyfully,
