THREE TENSES

February 16, 2011

I'm no grammar expert, but I know enough to understand past, present and future.

Grace and peace to you from him who is, and who was, and who is to come, and from the seven spirits before his throne, and from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth.
                                                  - Revelation 1:4,5 TNIV

Similar to us, John starts his famous letter telling the readers that he writes it to seven churches.  He writes to them about and in behalf of the God of three tenses: The God who is, the verb "to be."
Was
Is
Is to Come
That pretty much covers it, doesn't it? This is the God we worship, the God we follow, the God we serve.  Was-Is-Is to Come.

Yet, he drops on us a hand grenade of sorts, too. "First born from the dead"--Of course, he speaks of Jesus, but with the first born, there are more to come. That's his faithful people, children of God, the second born from the dead. That's you and me. Such is the God of Three Tenses.

Joyfully,
