KEEP YOUR HEAD

January 19, 2011

Literally speaking, I suppose it's good advice to keep one's head. But figuratively speaking, it is to keep thinking during the press of life.

But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry.
                                                  - 2 Timothy 4:5 TNIV

During the pressures of life there is the powerful urge to "lose one's head." Paul says, "Don't!" Paul gives continued leadership instructions to his protege Timothy. Keeping his head will involve:
--Control what we can. If we re-read 2 Timothy, we see quickly it's a wisdom book on practical leadership. Timothy cannot control all those about him, but he can control himself.
--Discipleship is social, not private. To grow in Christ and to serve Christ requires doing what we can while in the environment of many others. Some help, some hinder.

This is what Paul means when he says, "Keep your head."  Today we might translate it, "Keep your head in the game!"

Joyfully,
