YOUR BEST

December 30, 2010

"Do your best" we often say, but what does it mean? Often I suspect, it's another way of saying, "I'll try..." But biblically it's something more profound.

Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.
                                                   - 2 Timothy 2:15 TNIV

"Do your best..." Paul urges Timothy. Yet this "do your best" has real content. What if I changed the words to "give your best?"  We all have a "best," but to what or to whom do we give it? Paul tells us there is but one priority that merits "best," and it's the Lordship of Christ. Then he defines what "best" might look like.

Imagine this day as a gift we give to God. What will it be? In doing so, we'll need not trifle with shame or less than best, and we'll be guided by properly following and directed by God's Word. In Paul's teaching, "do your best" has little to do with good intentions, but what we actually do. So.....give your best, present your best to the one born for you.

Joyfully,
