In the barnyard the pig and chicken think about going into business. The chicken says, "Yeah, we can open a breakfast place, a ham and egger!" To which the pig protests, "Hold the phone! For you that's just a gift, but for me, it requires total commitment."

Into your hands I commit my spirit; redeem me, Lord, my faithful God.
- Psalm 31:5 TNIV

You may recognize this Psalmist's words from the lips of Jesus as he was dying on the cross. Perhaps Jesus was quoting this Psalm. Nevertheless it speaks of total commitment. To give one's spirit over to another, to place oneself into another's hands means surrender to new leadership.

Commit. A key element of discipleship is learning the punch line in the joke. We live more like the chicken, don't we? We give an egg here and there. To make Christ Lord, however, that requires total commitment.
