PEOPLE PLEASING

June 15, 2010

I really want people to be happy with me, to like me; I'm a classic people pleaser (Oh...not that I always please people!). People pleasing, however, is not always a good thing.

Yet at the same time many even among the leaders believed in him. But because of the Pharisees they would not openly acknowledge their faith for fear they would be put out of the synagogue; for they loved human glory more than the glory of God.
- John 12:42,43 TNIV

People were drawn to Jesus, but they were afraid. Not only were they afraid that following Jesus would penalize them with the religious leaders, they were afraid it would not please their friends and neighbors. People pleasing was more important than truth, more important than eternity, and more important than the Holy Spirit's witness to them saying, "He is the one!"

True discipleship is not necessarily convenient or popular, sometimes it leads us to choose who we most want to please: God or our friends?
Joyfully,
