BREAD

May 5, 2010

I love bread. I've baked bread for more than thirty years. My love affair with bread began when my dad brought home sourdough bread from San Francisco in the mid-1960s. Dr. Atkin's no carb diet is my idea of eternal condemnation. Bread is a pillar of discipleship.

Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry; whoever believes in me will never be thirsty."

Jesus speaks of a hunger and thirst that food or drink cannot fulfill. People starve, in other words, though they are well fed. People came to Jesus, because in their wiser moments they knew they suffered starvation. To be sure, not all understood, but many looked to Jesus, and when he said, "I am the bread of life," not only did they understand, but they knew they were hungry, and that he was the meal!

A sure sign of hunger, even spiritual malnutrition, is to attempt to feed a hunger, to slake a thirst by providing a substitute. The substitutes are infinite and all have been tried repeatedly. But the hunger to feed our spirit's the bread of Christ only will be fulfilled by the bread of life, Jesus Christ.
Joyfully,
