THE MAN

October 13, 2009

First, I beg your pardon for the sexism in this title, but it's not without some intention. "The Man" is a reference to someone in charge, as in "you are serving the man!" An interesting concept for Christ-followers.

This is why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God's servants, who give their full time to governing. Give to everyone what you owe: if you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor.
Romans 13:6,7 TNIV
Remember, at this point in Paul's letter to the Romans, he's turned to very practical matters like living in the real world, and how does one who serve the Lord, yet also serve as a citizen with a government. I confess that I bristle at nearly everyone of these words. "Taxes," "revenue," "governing authorities."

Yet, Paul tells us that as Christ-followers there is a proper role in serving The Man. It too is part of discipleship. "Let everyone be subject to he governing authorities..." (13:1)
