PRECIS, Vol 8 No 26

June 29, 2009

Dear Friend,

A précis is a condensation, a short summary of the main points of something.

Psalm 73 offers a wonderful précis of our life with God.
“When my heart was grieved and my spirit embittered, I was senseless and ignorant; I was a brute beast before you.” Psalm 73:21-22*

When our mind and emotions are embroiled in a difficult matter sometimes we think and act as if God isn’t here. We can behave like mindless animals.
“Yet I am always with you; you hold me by my right hand.” Psalm 73:23

Even in our least spiritually alert and mature moments our Lord leads us the way we lead a child whose hand we are holding.
“You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will take me into glory.” Psalm 73:24

In this life we will receive guidance just by asking for it, “If any of you is lacking in wisdom, ask God, who gives to all generously and ungrudgingly, and it will be given you.” James 1:5 NRSV

The conclusion of Psalm 73 begins with a word of hope for us all.
“Whom have I in heaven but you? And earth has nothing I desire besides you. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.” Psalm 73:25-26

Ours is the Lord who holds our hand, guides through this life and gives us eternal life. God is the strength of our hearts – and deserving of our trust!
