Genesis 27 tells the story of Jacob and Esau, an ugly one at that. Cheating deception, neither fellow is one to take home to introduce to mom and dad. Esau sells his inheritance rights for a Quarter-Pounder with Cheese.

Make every effort to live in peace with everyone and to be holy...
See that no one is sexually immoral, or is godless like Esau, who for a single meal sold his inheritance rights...
- Hebrews 12:14,16 TNIV

A few sentences after the Who's Who's, the Hall of Fame of Faithfulness in Hebrews 11, we are reminded of Esau. He's not in the Hall of Fame. Esau was casual about important matters, irreverent, disrespectful. He's called "godless." The issue really is not sexual immorality, or inheritance rules. The issue is Jacob's every effort" was to neglect what was important, and he put gravity on less than weighty matters.

Esau died several thousand years ago, yet he lives all around us these days. Let it not be so of us.
Joyfully,
