CROWD'S REBUKE

March 6, 2013

Majority may rule, but it doesn't mean it's correct. Crowds of people often try to "shout down" the few.

The crowd rebuked them and told them to be quiet, but they shouted all the louder, "Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!"
                                                  --Matthew 20:31 TNIV

Two blind men cry out to Jesus to heal them. But the crowds tell them angrily, "Hush, don't bother the rabbi!" That prompts the blind fellows to persist, and cry out louder. And Jesus acts in mercy to heal, to grant them sight.

Beware of sheepishly following the crowd. The crowd's reaction to Jesus and the blind beggars--they were wrong on both counts. The matter of faith must not be shaped by the crowd's opinion. We cry out to God, like the blind fellows, one by one; Jesus' response to us is not based upon polling data or the vote of the crowd, but our humble prayer, one by one.

Joyfully,
