DRY BONES

February 21, 2013

If you've ever been out in the desert, or watched a Western, you've seen a dried up old cow skull, or bones of a long-dead beast.

Then he said to me, "Prophesy to these bones and say to them, 'Dry bones, hear the word of the Lord! This is what the Sovereign Lord says to these bones: I will make breath enter you, and you will come back to life.'"
                                          --Ezekiel 37:4,5 TNIV

Ezekiel's vision is of the valley of dry bones; he's looking at the people of God, dried up, dead, desolate. There is a desperate need for new life. But a thoughtful look at Ezekiel 37 shows that new life comes from God; the bones cannot re-vivify themselves. God says, "I will make breath enter you, and you will come to life."

New life, like all creation, is an act of our Sovereign God. Dead people cannot rescue themselves. Like the creation of the world, God spoke creation into existence, God's Word brings life to the dry bones, our dry bones.
Joyfully,
