ABE LINCOLN JESUS
January 23, 2013
I'm not sure if Abraham Lincoln was a Christ-follower, but I do know he was a student of the Bible, and he reverenced the Creator and His Son.
"Every kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and every city or household divided against itself will not stand."
--Matthew 12:25 TNIV
Lincoln quoted Jesus when he spoke his famous words of a kingdom divided against itself cannot stand. He referred to the pending civil war over the matter of slavery and the preservation of the Union. Jesus first spoke these words when he was accused of being the devil who healed people. And Jesus' angry response said, "The devil will not do good work, nor heal anyone, or give sight to the blind." Good comes from good. Evil comes from evil.
Jesus is the one who cautions us, don't expect good fruit to come from a nasty tree. Good and evil cannot co-mingle. Lincoln understood Jesus' admonition. Do we?
