"YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH"

March 9, 2009

But I'm convinced we can!  "You can't handle the truth."  The great line from "A Few Good Men," the courtroom drama where Tom Cruise, prosecutor, grills Jack Nicholson, the defendant.  And the defendant fights back with this classic protest.

"If you are the Messiah," they said, "tell us."
Jesus answered, "If I tell you, you will not believe me, and if I asked you, you would not answer.  But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the mighty God."
They all asked, "Are you then the Son of God?"
He replied, "You say that I am."
Then they said, "Why do we need anymore testimony?  We have heard it from his own lips."
 - Luke 22:67-71 TNIV

Another courtroom drama.  The accusers ask Jesus for the truth, but the jury cannot handle the truth.  Not handle the truth?  Yes, first, they don't believe it, and second, they are blind to the possibility that it just might be true!  The truth of the very questions they ask stands before them and they order that truth dead.  They can't handle the truth.

The world around us today in 2009, seems bent on truth, yet when the claims of Christ are put forward--that same world often cannot handle, tolerate, or embrace that truth.  And that's the truth.  That leaves it up to us.  We are Christ's people.  Before he left, Jesus told us that we are the living evidence of the truth.  That's part of our job today--to be the in-the-flesh evidence that Christ is alive--the Body of Christ!
Joyfully,
