ROOSTER'S CROW

March 6, 2009

"Cock-adoodle-do." Kind of a funny sounding word, but in a disciple's mind, a bit haunting.

About an hour later another asserted, "Certainly this fellow was with him, for he is a Galilean."
Peter replied, "Man, I don't know what you're talking about!" Just as he was speaking, the rooster crowed.

- Luke 22:59,60 TNIV

Let me risk spiritualizing this story. Peter promises Jesus that in spite of others, he will never deny him, never betray him. But of course, he does. As Jesus foretold, "

"Before sunrise, before the rooster crows, you'll deny me three times." And he did. Could it be that we may never say, "I never knew him," or our betrayal of Jesus will not be so much our failure to witness, but every time we sin, every time we ignore his claim on us, and our commitment to be his disciples, we are in effect saying, "I never knew him?" And the rooster crows.

Yet don't forget, the rooster crowing was not the end of Peter's story, neither is it the last word for us. "He is risen." "He is risen indeed."

Joyfully,
