GUARD

November 29, 2011

A guard is one who stands watch over property, given a trust to protect, maintain integrity, etc.

Set a guard over my mouth, Lord; keep watch over the door of my lips. Do not let my heart be drawn to what is evil so that I take part in wicked deeds along with those who are evildoers; do not let me eat of their delicacies.
                                                  --Psalm 141:3,4 TNIV

The Psalmist is concerned not so much for protection from without, but protection from within. Imagine a guard watching over the words that flow up from our lips and into the ears and hearts of others. This is the Psalmists self-prayer. As in "Save me from my own big mouth."

We often spend time praying about others mouths. Maybe the Psalmist gives us a worthy tip: Our concern is better focused on guarding our own mouth. "Set a guard over my mouth..."

Joyfully,
