THE PRESENT OF PRESENCE

Do you remember, not all that long ago, when the telephone companies urged us to reach out and touch somebody? Just call someone long distance was their point, if I recall.

I have much to write you, but I do not want to use paper and ink. Instead, I hope to visit you and talk with you face to face, so that our joy may be complete.

There is no substitute for face to face. Email? Amazing communication capacity, and instant messaging too, even Twitter. Telephone? reach out and touch? Nice to talk, great, but no touch. Written note? Remember this primitive grace? All these are good, but still something's missing.

Face to face, person to person, there's a whole lot more going on; it's nearly sacramental. Let us not let the information age reduce us to merely paper and ink, or even binary digital bytes of communication. Get face to face. Make our joy, your joy, complete.
