SIMON & GARFUNKEL & ISAIAH

December 14, 2010

A long, long time ago in a faraway galaxy, folksingers Simon and Garfunkel had a huge hit, "The Sounds of Silence." Did any of us know of what it spoke?

For when I called, no one answered, when I spoke, no one listened. They did evil in my sight and chose what displeases me.
                                                     - Isaiah 66:4 TNIV

Isaiah's last words in his prophecy cry, "Is anybody listening? Does no one care?" Simon and Garfunkel end their classic folk song, "The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls, and tenement halls, and whispered in the sounds of silence." Isaiah, I suspect, thought his message from God was largely ignored by the people of God. Simon and Garfunkel prophesied that the prophet's words too often were found in a place of abandonment. Then, Isaiah was silent.

Yet, surely Isaiah knew that amongst the people of God there always has been a remnant that longs to be faithful. I pray it is us.

Joyfully,
