KNOW NOT

July 16, 2010

As Jesus is crucified, he says the famous words, "Father, forgive them for they know not what they do." It was true throughout the betrayal, arrest, crucifixion and even resurrection. But it was true before, and it's true today.

"Shall I crucify your king? Pilate asked.
We have no king but Caesar," the chief priest answered."
- John 19: 15 TNIV

The people did not know what they were doing. Oh, they thought they did. The chief priest thinks fervently that action of killing Jesus will protect the people, and their religion from the threat of Jesus. He is so blind to his ignorance that the chief priest blasphemes, the very charge that convicted Jesus! When knowingly he says, we "have no king but Caesar," having just convicted Jesus of blasphemy, the chief priest commits the very crime. He utters the unthinkable to call Caesar his king.

He was so sure, yet so wrong, and through it all he knew not. The very God that we treat so casually, this Jesus, is still our Savior, the one who forgives. He lives, he loves, while we still know not. This is not a story of 2000 years ago, this is our story today. Worship him today. Serve him today. Follow him today.
Joyfully,
