STRATEGIC PLANNING

March 26, 2010

The Danish philosopher, Soren Kierkegaard, heard a lecturer one evening speak of the future, and as the lecturer left, he spoke the goodbye, "See you tomorrow," to which Kierkegaard dryly replied, "How can you be so sure?" By the way, the story ends with the lecturer killed in a terrible accident going home!

Now listen, you who say, "Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money." Why you do not even know what will happen tomorrow....Instead, you ought to say, "If it is the Lord's will, we will live and do this or that."
---James 4:13-15 TNIV

James nor Kierkegaard are averse to planning, but do caution against arrogance, and a foolish view that exalts the self, but ignores bigger issues, like God and the tentativeness of all existence.

Some plans can lead to vanity, attempting to eliminate the tentativeness of life, and also, the obsession with security puts us on the throne of our own existence rather than the only one meriting such a place, Jesus Christ. A strategic plan without Christ as the foundation...well, "See you tomorrow."
