RASTLE

February 4, 2010

I love to hear a young guy say, "I'm a rastler...yeah. I do me some rastlin'." I've learned to translate through the colloquialism: "Oh, you mean, wrestle; you're a wrestler." If you are a Christ-follower, part of discipleship may be wrestling as well.

After Jacob returned from Paddan Aram, God appeared to him again and blessed him. God said to him, "Your name is Jacob, but you will no longer be called Jacob, your name will be Israel. So he named him Israel.
- Genesis 35:9,10 TNIV

The name, "Israel," means, "one who wrestles with God." Faithfulness to God, a relationship with God for Jacob was like a wrestling match. Faithfulness, being Jacob, it was one challenge after another. He was Israel, a struggler, a wrestler with God.

So how is discipleship for you? Peachy-keen? Easy street, going from strength to strength? Or do you feel a bit more like Jacob, rastlin' with God? Life with God, life itself is good, but it's always a rastlin' match. Jacob knew it every time he heard his name, Israel. Do we?
Joyfully,
