AHAB & JEZEBEL

January 15, 2010

The worst of Alcatraz, murderer's row--imagine a person, the worst ever to be locked up at the terrible prison, or number one in a listing of the most cruel, wicked and bloodthirsty of murderers. 1 Kings 16 transitions from the previous list of terrible kings, but then it comes to Ahab.

Ahab son of Omri did more evil in the eyes of the Lord than any of those before him. He not only considered it trivial to commit the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, but he also married Jezebel daughter...of the king of the Sidonians, and began to serve Baal and worship him.

Enter Ahab. Ahab, who "considered it trivial"--the sins committed by those on the Rogues' List before him. Ahab mocked the silly little sins, and led the people of Israel further from God. He married his own kind: Jezebel. We will soon learn Jezebel was even more despicable than Ahab. It's quite a story.

Truth is, there is nothing trivial about any sin. Jesus teaches us such in the Sermon on the Mount that just the pondering of murder is to be a murderer. Such Ahabic rationalizations start when we use phrases and words like, "no big deal," or "trivial." Stay tuned for more from Ahab.
Joyfully,
