VICTIM OF SOY-CUM-STANCE

January 19, 2010

Curly, of Three Stooges fame, when caught by his buddy, Moe, who was about to poke Curly in the eyes, heard Curly's defense: "I was a victim of soy-cumstance!" He got poked in any case. Curly was not the first or the last to use such a defense.

"If I go and tell Ahab and he doesn't find you, he will kill me. Yet I your servant have worshiped the Lord since my youth."
- 1 Kings 18:12 TNIV

King Ahab wants the Lord's prophet, Elijah, dead! He issues an All-Points-Bulletin for Elijah's arrest. He goes in one direction himself in search of this holy-pain-in-the-neck, and one of his subjects, Obadiah, goes in the other direction to bring Elijah in. Obadiah finds Elijah, and is surprised when Elijah says, "Bring Ahab to me." Obadiah, protests, "Elijah, sure, as soon as I turn my back, you're gonna skeedaddle, and then Ahab will be in a rage, and I'll be a dead man. I'm just doing my job, don't do me bad! I'm a victim of circumstance!" But Elijah assured Obadiah, "Friend, I know you are a servant of the Lord, and the Lord has told me I must confront Ahab, bring him to me." And so it happens, as we will see.

Elijah assures Obadiah that we are not victims of circumstance when we serve the living God our Lord. Ahab is not God, not the Lord, but a king. Whatever your circumstance this day, take heart, you serve the living God.
Joyfully,
