LEADERSWHIP VACUUM

December 16, 2009

Leadership requires vigilance. The captain of the ship, even when not at the helm, must be "on top of it." To falter is to open the door to all sorts of mischief.

Then Nathan asked Bathsheba, Solomon's mother, "Have you not heard that Adonijah, the son of Haggith, has become king, and our lord David knows nothing about it?

- 1 Kings 1:11 TNIV

David, the King of Israel, stumbles in his last days of life. He fails to stay vigilant as leader, as king. In the void his sons fight for the throne. None of us are king, none of us are at the helm, but our Lord has given us some context for leadership. We are wise not to make David's mistake. Let us not make age, weariness, or waning attention open the window of opportunity for all manners of mischief.

Jesus' teaching urges us to be constant and vigilant in standing watch. We're half-way through Advent, a season of preparation, but whatever season, there is no season that allows for a leadership vacuum.
Joyfully,
