UNFINISHED

November 13, 2009

"Unfinished business"--we know the term, the concept. But what if it were spoken of us, as in we have some, we are some unfinished business?

I know your deeds, you have a reputation of being alive, but you are dead. Wake up! Strengthen what remains and is about to die, for I have found your deeds unfinished in the sight of my God.
- Revelation 3:1,2 TNIV

The church in Sardis, its people, have gone dormant, stagnant, stuck in a rut. The angel tells the people that they are "unfinished." Oh, this isn't the "unfinished" as in yet to come to full maturity, no, not that idea. This is the "unfinished" as in you are fifty years old, but grown satisfied with third grade level discipleship maturity. Unfinished. That sort of "unfinished" is not life, but death.

The angel tells the people these things not to induce guilt and shame, but to summon to repent, to turn again to their supposed Lord, and to find life. The angel's word was true for Sardis two thousand years ago, and beckons us as well.
.
Joyfully,
