FEARING THE DAY TO COME
July 6, 2009
Sometimes we awaken to the day with dread. On the docket is some foreboding task, or confrontation.
When I am afraid of the evils to come,
comfort me by showing me
that in myself I am a dying, condemned wretch,
but in Christ I am reconciled and live;
that in myself I find insufficiency and no rest,
but in Christ there is satisfaction and peace;
that in myself I am feeble and unable to do good,
but in Christ I have the ability to do all things.
-The Valley of Vision
Like the Psalms, great prayers can lift us above our circumstances to see a new vision, and instill hope. Time and again, The Valley of Vision, a collection of Puritan prayers does just this for me.
Above is an excerpt that invites us to a Christ-centered perspective when we fear the day to come. Pray it for yourself. May it lead us to still more prayers, and unto Christ.
Joyfully,
Dale Patterson
